Thankfully, the bar of quality in every subsequent WWE game on the GameCube after was significantly raised in each entry, and for what good this game has done, it's still a pretty good starting point, even if it's far from anything essential. At the end of the day, this is an okay at best game that's fun enough for wrestling fans, but not much more. But, thanks to the lack of any in depth modes and less than stellar presentation, I can't really recommend this game to anyone except wrestling fans, because it suffers hard from "first game syndrome", making every other GCN wrestling game that came after much better options than this. With a great roster, fun gameplay, and many different arenas it's certainly passable.

All in all, this game is simply just alright. The gameplay is addictive, as I said, and while I still stand by the fact that it's not quite as polished as future games, I think it makes great use of the GCN controller.

The roster is also pretty great, as there's a wide array of wrestlers from the era this game came out in, meaning that, nowadays, this has a roster full of legends. The amount of match types and awesome arenas are very plentiful. Despite these problems, I do like a lot of things about this game. But, besides that, there's not a lot to keep you busy. It's not terrible, but it relies a lot on preset parts with not a lot of real input from the player, meaning that the created wrestler will probably never quite look the way the player wants them to. The thing that is most disappointing is the lackluster Create a Wrestler mode. To be fair, you do earn money to purchase unlockables in the shop zones, which is nice.

There aren't that many deep modes here, either, as instead of a story mode, you get a championship gauntlet, and that's about it. I know that's more of a me problem, but I personally find it harder to get into a match when the camera is so high. I never liked the fact that every match seems to be overhead, either. It's still fun and addictive, don't get me wrong, but it's clear that it's from a first game, as there's not that much polish. The gameplay feels a bit off, as nothing really seems to flow that well. They can often look plasticy and lifeless with not much detail. They're not bad, as they still look better than what you'd find on an N64, but still. The visuals, surprisingly, aren't that good here.

Xbox with the painfully lackluster "WWF Raw" and GameCube with this, which, to be fair, isn't a bad game, but it suffers hard in many areas, which makes it an incredibly flaccid experience, especially compared to the past 2-3 "Smackdown!" games.

In the meantime, while the PS2 has the amazing "Smackdown! Shut Your Mouth", the GameCube and the original Xbox were floundering hard in terms of quality in wrestling games. To me, it wasn't until the "Day Of Reckoning" games where wrestling games started to actually get great on the GameCube. The GameCube had some very humble beginnings in terms of wrestling games, and it shows here with this first entry.
